this show was a birthday show for me. i was living in hotspings NC at the time river guiding. barrow a buddys car to make it to the show. very cool lot across the street. mike Gorden and Benevento and Russo were late to the gig so phill played first and left a smoking crater. i was quite confuse once phill ended. at the exit door i was told by the door attendant. thank good ness best the funk and harsh drone sound. to had me walking to and fro the speakers.
ps does any one have a recording of mike and Benevento and Russo duo from that night

I remember hopping on the Phil Lesh and Friends / GRAB dual Tour in summer 2006 right after Bonnaroo(where Radiohead played their greatest show ever, GRAB made their public debut as the latenight superjam and Phil closed the festival) - it started out ridiculously good with these shows with Scofield, who is a real hero of mine. His work with Medeski, Martin, and Wood is some of the best jazz quartet that's ever been done, A Go Go being one of Scofield's seminal records, plus Juice and Out Louder, I was so excited, Mike Gordon(who would play after Phil and Friends were done) came out early and tuned Phil's bass, very chill atmosphere, as reflected by the first set. When its a band like this, a chill 1st set is a great harbinger of things to come. The 2nd started with something akin to an a jam that sounded like Acidhead, a track off the Scofield album Uberjam, this incredible intro combined with "joan moans" led into the best post-Grateful Dead take on Dark Star I've heard - definitely one of the top 3 that Phil and Friends have ever done, and the rest of the ENTIRE set is outrageous, especially the He's Gone > Eyes of the World, its all amazingly well done.

All bands from the Dead family seem to play great around this part of the country. I'm lucky to live in NC. The show was half sold and the opening band missed their flight so Phil started early. The place was half empty and looked like a tye-dyed highschool sock-hop. The whole upstairs had maybe 100 heads. It gave the show a very personal private feel like it was invite only or something like that. Plus they sold mixed drinks there! Unlike my native home of Charlotte.(home of the greatest Phil show ever! Look it up!)The ushers opened the floor and every one had a ball. First set cool song mix. The steel guitar in Candyman was unreal. Thats the way it allways should have been played. Jerry should have broke that thing out more often. Second set was blistering and just when you thought they were about spent for the night they rip Viola Lee Blues a new one.
The recording ain't the best. I'd say a 3-Star but the song selection, Quality of jam, and memories of all the wacky wierdness that went on that night is well worthy of 5-Star. So for me it balances out to a solid 4.

The first set was a little loose, but the second set was amazing. You can hear "Eyes" being teased throughout the whole set. I'm not a very big Joan Osborne fan and hearing her sing lead on Candyman makes my stomach turn. Overall good show, good recording, worth the download. Scofield's my daddy.
